LAPG Terrain Flex Slim Fit Jeans Review

If looking for some jeans that look stylish with a classic look yet still let one be active while holding a decent amount of EDC, the LAPG Terrain series is worth checking out.

So for some background most days I don't put much thought into how I look where I have quite the pile of tac style pants and I appreciate their holding / movement capability. The lady friend however appreciates when I try and dress more "normal" for going out and date night type stuff. I do have some more traditional mall style jeans, but to get a nice fit the loss of pockets and fabric restriction quite cramps my style. In those it feels restrictive to do some pretty basic stuff like tie shoes, so I hate to think what would happen if I gotta jump a fence.

Luckily the LAPG (LA Police Gear) Terrain series is available to offer a pretty great compromise so I can cosplay looking like a more normal person while still being able to do some man stuff. Before I get too into it, it seems common for dudes to jump straight to calling any "fitted" pants as gay. It seems they missed the memo because if you actually ask any ladies, ya know instead of a bunch of other dudes, they will say they will want to see a more fitted design. Now of course there is a balance where skinny jeans would be going too far in that direction, but mega baggy jeans definitely are not making the panties drop. On that note, the Terrain series is offered in both straight fit and slim fit to give further options.

The 13oz stretch denim (98% Cotton, 2% Spandex) is definitely one of the main aspects that give the pants reasonable mobility. That 2% doesn't sound like much, but it is night and day compared to traditional fabric fitted jeans and being able to just move around. I went with the medium wash version where I like the gradient effects give a worn in look without having super rough spots or holes. For those who want a more clean solid color look the dark wash color is also offered. The contrasting tan stitching is a pretty classic look with bar-tacks in appropriate places and even some rivets. If being nit-picky the leather patch on the back waist is a bit big and contrasty for my tastes. The logo variant seems like an odd remix as well for the look, but worst case if anyone hates it, it can be removed with some de-stitching.

Overall the length is reasonable for me on my 28"x30" pair. I appreciate they even offer 28" waist for my monkey ass, as not every place does. My low waist is actually about 30", but for whatever reason it seems I usually have to get 28" when it comes to fitted pants from any manufacturer. If perhaps I was planning on doing a bunch of IWB CCW with these pants then I would look into the 30" waist size. At 30" length for me, I can leave the leg ends as is and have just a little baggyness, but they also seem to look good rolled up.

Holding capacity wise the 9 pocket layout works pretty nice. I appreciate it is a symmetrical design so don't get cheated out of a pocket or two on a side. The front has classic side hand pockets with enough depth for most 30 round AR mags, but then also good sized stash pockets just above them, either capable of holding most pistol magazines. I wish the stash pockets had a little more depth to fully hold my smart phone since I roll with the smaller Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact as opposed to most big ass phones.

The main back pockets are reasonably sized, also able to hold pistol or rifle magazines. Easy to overlook, additional back pockets exist to the upper side of the main ones (some might call hip pockets) which look even more sized with rifle magazines in mind. The belt loop spacing is reasonable and I like the look of the big centered back belt loop. It looks nicer than say 2 normal loops next to each other, and this is also where the 9th pocket comes in offering a little stash pocket. The size is about right for a key, but I'd have some concerns if you find yourself ever up-side-down, items might fall out.

For the fly area a metal button and YKK zipper are used which fits the classic theme. In the funzies spirit there is a little "PEW PEW" tag on the inner fly where some might think a bit low brow, but all ladies I asked didn't seem to mind. This would be keeping in mind if you made it to sexy time, a silly label is not going to sabotage the deal and worst case again you can always de-stitch it off it worried.

For comparisons sake these designs do look quite a lot like the 5.11 Defender jeans with some small changes like symmetrical front pocket layout, and back centered belt loop. Both are good designs, but both are also made overseas so if want to save a little more, the LAPG Terrain series offers a very similar result at a lower cost and at the moment, better availability.
